Foregone Contusions

If previous relationships
are the tangled undergrowth
of the jungle floor,
let meeting your true love
be a machete.

If previous relationships
are a raging river poised
to sweep you over a precipice,
let meeting your true love
be a sturdy bridge.

If previous relationships
are inky clouds that
shield the sun from your cheeks,
let meeting your true love
be a relentless wind that
hustles them to the horizon.

If previous relationships
are broken glass that
litters the path to happiness,
let meeting your true love
be hobnailed boots that
grind the shards to powder.

If previous relationships
are cold steel bars
that imprison your heart,
let meeting your true love
be a hacksaw in a cake.

But if previous relationships
are a foundation of knowledge
which educates your actions,
let meeting your true love
be celebrated as a fresh beginning
unenccumbered by the past.
