Herbsttag

Befiehl den letzten Fruchten voll zu sein;

Autumn Day trans. Fred W. Bergmann

Lord: it's time. Summer was superlative.
Set your shadow upon the sundials
and let the wind loose upon the fields.

Command the last fruits to ripen;
give them yet two more balmy days,
urge them to completion and hunt
the last sweetness in the strong wine.

He who has no house, must never build.
He who is alone, must so remain,
must waken, read, write long letters
and restlessly wander hither and yon
in the allées, when leaves float down.

Klage

O wie ist alles fern
und lange vergangen.
Ich glaube, der Stern,
von welchem ich Glanz
empfange, is seit Jahrtausenden tot.
Ich glaube, im Boot,
das vorŸberfuhr,
hörte ich etwas Bange sagen.
Im Hause hatte eine Uhr
geschlagen…
In welchem Haus?…

Complaint trans. Fred W. Bergmann

O how distant everything is
and how long gone.
I believe that the star,
whose gleam I intercept,
is millenia dead.
I believe, aboard the boat
which sailed by,
I heard something fearful spoken.
At home a clock has struck …
In which house? …
I wish from my heart
to stride outside under a huge sky.
I wish to pray.
And one of all those stars
must really still exist.
I believe I knew
which one alone
of those had endured—
which one like a gleaming city
stands in the heavens at the far end of its light …
