Book manuscript: A first book of poems will be selected for publication from an open competition of manuscripts. First Class or Priority Mail are preferred. Manuscripts should be 50-75 pages of original poetry, in English, by a U.S. citizen or permanent resident who has neither published, nor committed to publish, a volume of poetry 40 pages or more in length (individual poems may have been previously published). The winner will receive a publication contract with Southern Illinois University Press, and will be awarded a $1000 prize. The winner will also receive $1500 as an honorarium for a reading at SIU. Manuscripts should be typewritten, single-spaced. No more than one poem per page. Printing that is not letter-quality is not acceptable. A clean photocopy is recommended. Please do not send your only copy of the manuscript since manuscripts will not be returned, and please do not include illustrations. CRAB ORCHARD REVIEW and Southern Illinois University Press assume no responsibility for damaged or lost manuscripts. All entrants will receive a one-year subscription to CRAB ORCHARD REVIEW. Submit two title pages for the collection. The author's name, address, and daytime phone number should appear on the first title page only. The author's name should appear nowhere else in the manuscript. An acknowledgments page listing poems previously published in magazines, journals, or anthologies should be placed after the second title page. Include an SASE for notification of contest results. Poems: Residencies are available for the months of February, June, and October from the 1st through the end of the month inclusive. Writers will share accommodations in bay-view cottages in the serenely beautiful village of Oysterville and will receive a weekly stipend for food. Our goal is to provide writers with an environment in which they can pursue their work without interruption. A suitable applicant is a writer who has demonstrated talent and commitment to his or her career. Both emerging and established poets, fiction writers, creative non-fiction writers, playwrights, and screen writers are eligible for the residencies. People of some self-sufficiency are our ideal. Applicants may not be current board members, advisory board members, staff or consultants for the Espy Foundation, or their immediate family members. Residents are expected to provide their own transportation to and from Oysterville, which is 180 miles from Seattle and 120 miles from Portland, and they are encouraged to keep a car with them for the duration of the residency. Deadline for application: November 1 for the FEBRUARY Residency, March 1 for the JUNE Residency, July 1 for the OCTOBER Residency. Applications must include the enclosed application form and all required materials specified in the form. Applications and Sponsors' Letters must be postmarked on or before the deadlines. (Sponsors' Letters are acceptable by fax to (360) 665-5224 if received by the deadline. A non-refundable fee of $20, made payable to The Willard R. Espy Literary Foundation, must be included with your application form, project description, and work samples. Chapbook manuscript : Submit a manuscript of 16 to 24 pages of poetry with a strong sense of place, focusing on the natural world, culture, history, or personal experiences of a region. The theme will be broadly interpreted. This will be a blind judging: Do not include your name on the poems. Submit one cover page clipped to the manuscript with title only and a separate title page with name, address, and e-mail. Manuscript should be paginated, secured with a clip, and include contents and acknowledgements for previously published work (these and title page not included in 16 to 24 page count). Simultaneous submissions accepted, but you must notify us if your work is accepted elsewhere. Include a reading fee of $15 with your submission. Poems: three, month-long competitions, during June, July and August for micro-fiction. That is defined as being stories of 30 words or less, or very short poems—5 lines or less! Each month there will be four winners in each category; stories and poems. Each winner will recieve a prize of €25 and a copy of the Fish Anthology. At the end of August, all winning entries will form the final short-list from which one winner will be selected in each category. Poems: The Poetry Society is pleased once again to be able, with support from the Foyle Foundation, to offer young poets an opportunity to study alongside leading contemporary poets. The competition is free to enter, and attracts entries not just from Britain but from around the world. Any writer between the ages of 11 and 17 can enter by sending their poem or poems on A4 paper with their name, address, school and date of birth written clearly on the reverse of every sheet. Poems can also be sent by e-mail. Poets can enter as many poems as they choose, of any length and on any theme. Competition entries cannot be returned under any circumstances, so please make sure you send copies only. All winners and runners-up will receive book prizes donated by publishers Bloodaxe and Faber & Faber, plus free youth membership of the Poetry Society for one year, and will be invited to an awards party at the Royal Festival Hall on National Poetry Day in October. The 15 overall winners will be invited to attend the prize-winners' writing course at the Arvon Centre, Lumb Bank in February.
