Book manuscript: A first book of poems will be selected for publication from an open competition of manuscripts. First Class or Priority Mail are preferred. Manuscripts should be 50-75 pages of original poetry, in English, by a U.S. citizen or permanent resident who has neither published, nor committed to publish, a volume of poetry 40 pages or more in length (individual poems may have been previously published). The winner will receive a publication contract with Southern Illinois University Press, and will be awarded a $1000 prize. The winner will also receive $1500 as an honorarium for a reading at SIU. Manuscripts should be typewritten, single-spaced. No more than one poem per page. Printing that is not letter-quality is not acceptable. A clean photocopy is recommended. Please do not send your only copy of the manuscript since manuscripts will not be returned, and please do not include illustrations. CRAB ORCHARD REVIEW and Southern Illinois University Press assume no responsibility for damaged or lost manuscripts. All entrants will receive a one-year subscription to CRAB ORCHARD REVIEW. Submit two title pages for the collection. The author's name, address, and daytime phone number should appear on the first title page only. Chapbook manuscript: Biennial contest. Submit a manuscript of 16 to 24 pages of poetry with a strong sense of place, focusing on the natural world, culture, history, or personal experiences of a region. The theme will be broadly interpreted. This will be a blind judging: Do not include your name on the poems. Submit one cover page clipped to the manuscript with title only and a separate title page with name, address, and e-mail. Manuscript should be paginated, secured with a clip, and include contents and acknowledgements for previously published work (these and title page not included in 16 to 24 page count). Simultaneous submissions accepted, but you must notify us if your work is accepted elsewhere. Include a reading fee of $15 with your submission. 5 poems: Astraea Lesbian Writers Fund supports the work of emerging lesbian writers. First place awardees and two runners-up in the poetry and fiction categories will receive cash awards ($10,000 for awardee; $1,500 for runners-up). This year’s deadline for applications is February 15, 2005. To be eligible for an award from the Lesbian Writers Fund, you must satisfy all of the following: You are a lesbian writer of either fiction or poetry. You reside in the United States. Your work includes some lesbian content. You have published at least one piece of your writing (in any genre) in a newspaper, magazine, journal, anthology, or professional web publication (excluding personal or selfproduced homepages).
